Rotating Light Columns

Questacon, Canberra

ES designed, engineered, constructed and installed two interactive Rotating Light Column exhibits, attached to structural pillars within Questacon’s foyer.
The intent was to create a standard structure for the columns which would house easily interchangeable artwork, capable of showcasing a diverse range of scientific principles; the initial principles showcased being Polarised Light and Moire Patterns.

Kaleidoscope (Rototron)

Questacon, Canberra

ES detail designed, engineered, constructed, and installed this inspirational centrepiece for the Questacon foyer.
The 2.5 tonnes, 6m long, 5m diameter rotating kaleidoscope was installed 9m off the ground around an existing walkway.
Known as the ‘Rototron’ it was rated as the 2nd most popular exhibit of the 200 interactives in the centre, surpassed only by a 3m free fall slide.

Camwave

Questacon, Canberra

ES worked in close consultation with Questacon to detail design, engineer, manufacture and install this world first double-cam wave exhibit.

An assembly of 60 large rotating cams transfer helical forms into a sine wave. The effect is a 6×2m organic wall that washes silently over the visitor, configured to cycle between static and dynamic waves.

Einstein Sculpture

Questacon, Canberra

Situated near Questacon’s main entrance, this 3D sculpture can be viewed in two different ways: from the front, it is a bust of Einstein; from the side it makes the shape of a Peace Dove.

This 2 metre x 4 metre metal sculpture thus provides the visitor with an immediate and compelling introduction to the world of science.

Measure Island

Questacon, Canberra

2008

Continuing ES’ long-standing relationship with Questacon, five interactives were designed and built for Questacon’s new travelling exhibition on the science of measurement;

  • What a Croc: visitors grapple with the challenges associated with measuring irregularly-shaped lengths
  • Balance Platform: this large circular platform that tilts in all directions. Groups use their body weight to try and keep it balanced.
  • You’re so Vane: visitors build their own weather vane and see how it measures wind direction;
  • High Horse: demonstrates standard units of measure, and
  • Speed Ball: uses the Doppler effect to measure speed of balls thrown at the detector.
